Hiking up and into the depths of Sypes Canyon, this is a great hike for exercise and to feel completely surrounded by the beautiful Montana wilderness.
The Sypes Canyon hike is roughly 6.3 miles out and back and is considered moderate. The elevation gain is relatively gradual but still challenging at times. This took us about 3 hours, with a few stops to take pictures and hydrate. Dogs are allowed on this trail. Many are off leash so be aware.

Directions (Google Maps): To get to Sypes Canyon, search for the Sypes Canyon Trailhead in Bozeman, MT or click here.
Directions (old school maps): From Bozeman, take 19th Ave north until you turn right on Springhill Road. In 1.5 miles turn right on Sypes Canyon and take it until it ends at the parking lot. There is an overflow lot as well. Please drive safe in the residential areas.
Driving Info: This is all paved so it’s accessible to anybody.
Time & Weather: We did this hike at the beginning of June. The weather was mostly sunny and cold. A lot of this hike is in the shade as you cut through the canyon, so temperatures can vary.
Gear: Some good boots or trail-runners and hiking poles will get you through this hike. Pay attention to weather and wear layers, as things can change quickly. Also it’s advised to always carry bear spray in the mountains of Montana.
Trail Navigation: The trail is easy to follow, and continues on past the end point 3 miles in.
Water & Food: Pack water as always, and some food to enjoy near the endpoint of the trail when the views open up. Keep in mind your tasty snacks will smell good to grizzlies.
Trailhead Info: The trailhead is well marked, and sits within some residential homes so please be respectful. There are about a dozen parking spots at the trailhead, and another dozen at the overflow lot a bit down the road.

Right after the parking lot, you’ll cut through this corridor which runs between some private land. Please be respectful and keep dogs leashed.
Once you pass through the corridor you’ll begin to ascend as you cut into the beautiful canyon.
Much of the hike up looks like this, where you’re cutting through wooded forests.
As you approach the top the views start to open up to your right.
This gorgeous mountain path winds upwards and into Sypes Canyon. This is close to the endpoint of the trail where you can turn around or continue on.
Stay aware as you hike back to the trailhead. Even though this trail gets popular during the warmer months, it’s still bear country.
