A quick family friendly hike if you’ve already explored the main section of Bryce Canyon Park, this trail offers a scenic river, rock formations, waterfall and cave feature.
The Mossy Cave trail is a 1 mile out-and-back hike in Bryce Canyon National Park near Hatch, Utah. This is very easy hike for all ages. Since it is within the boundaries of Bryce Canyon National Park, dogs are not allowed on this hike. It took us 30 minutes to view the many scenic features of this quick hike.
Details:
Directions (Google Maps): To get to the Mossy Cave trailhead, search for the Mossy Cave Trailhead Parking Lot in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah or click here. Note that this hike is technically within the boundaries of Bryce Canyon National Park, but is not through the main entrance.
Directions (old school maps): From Kanab, Springdale or Hatch head north on Highway 89 and then turn left onto Highway 12. Go for 17 miles and turn into the small parking lot on the right of the road.
Driving Info: This is an easy paved drive the entire way.
Time & Weather: We hiked this trail in late February and started hiking around 3pm. The weather was moderate at 50 degrees. There was snow and ice at places that required some careful footing but this is generally a very easy and well maintained trail for all ages.
Gear: We wore 2-3 layers for warmth, solid hiking boots, gloves, hat & sunglasses but only because we came from a tougher hike earlier in the day. Due to the shortness of this hike normal walking clothes are sufficient.
Trail Navigation: The trail is easy to follow.
Water & Food: Water is not necessary for this quick hike, but during the summer months when it’s hot make sure to stay hydrated.
Trailhead Info: The trail starts at the Mossy Cave Trailhead Parking Lot which is directly off of Highway 12. There are lots of spots considering the shortness of this hike but it will fill up in the busier months when Bryce Canyon gets most of its tourism. There is a bathroom in the parking lot.

Follow the gentle stream up towards the hoodoos.
During the colder months the cave may have hanging icicles, adding extra color and layers of depth.
