Hiking The Narrows in Zion NP, Utah

The Narrows hike is a unique experience unlike anything else. You’ll feel tiny hiking between the towering canyon walls as you carve your way up the Virgin River. The water will fill your boots and run all the way up to your smiling face.

The Narrows is up to a 9 mile out and back hike in Zion National Park, Utah. Due to the logistics and the fact that you’re trekking through the river (rent the proper equipment!), this hike is considered moderate to difficult. Since it is within the boundaries of Zion National Park, dogs are not allowed on this hike. It took us 5 hours with a couple stops for pictures and short detours exploring the canyon.

Details:

Directions (Google Maps): To get to the Narrows trailhead, search for the Riverside Walk Trailhead or click here.

Directions (old school maps): From Springdale head north on Highway 9. From the toll booth entrance, go 1.5 miles and then turn left onto Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Take the road for 6.2 miles and you’ll dead end at the turnaround. There are restrooms at the parking lot.

Driving Info: This is an easy paved drive the entire way. Look out for deer, cyclists and hikers on all roads within Zion National Park. Note that Zion Canyon Scenic Drive will often be closed to vehicles when it gets busy. This happens daily during the busy months where only a shuttle is allowed. Even in the slow months once the parking areas along the route fill up, park rangers will close off the entrance to this road and you’ll have to walk or bike along it.

Time & Weather: We hiked this trail in early January and started hiking around 10am. The weather was cold at 42 degrees. The wind was light to moderate throughout the hike. There was snow and ice at places that. One thing to pay attention to is the speed/flow of the river. If it’s too fast or strong, hiking is not allowed. When you rent your gear, any employee can let you know what the current conditions are.

Gear: First things first, rent the proper gear. We used Zion Outfitters which was quick & easy. They provide water boots that have solid grip, water proof pants/bib and walking sticks. All were essential as the hiking through the water is uniquely challenging. We wore 2-3 layers for warmth underneath the bib, hat, beanie, gloves & sunglasses. There is not much exposure due to the high canyon walls you’ll hike between.

Trail Navigation: The trail is easy to follow since you’ll be following the river upstream.

Water & Food: We each drank 2 liters of water. In the warmer months you should definitely bring extra water. There is no water source along the trail. We had some trail mix and protein bar snacks along the way.

Trailhead Info: The trail starts at the Riverside Walk Trailhead within Zion National Park. There are about 40 parking spots and a restroom, but it fills up quickly during the busy times.

After a mile or so, you’ll be into the water. Depending on water flow (always check the current conditions!) you’ll be at least ankle deep for most of this hike.
